  I think the best way to keep overly-eager newbies out of the mailing 
lists is (1) by having a newsgroup for newbies and (2) making it clear 
that newbie questions are not appropriately intermingled with messaging 
that is involved with matters of system maintenance and development.

 OTOH, linux-activists GEN is a good example of what happens when the 
corresponding .help newsgroup is allowed to languish, however: the 
channel gets flooded with messages that should have been posted in 
comp.os.linux.help!

 Not either-or, but both-and.
