Subject: RAM disk: summary

Hi, thanks for all the hints on the usability of a RAM disk
for improving on compilation time.

I have 3MB XMS from which 1MB was in use by SMARTDRV.
From the remaining 2MB free I tried to make a RAM drive
of 1MB, leaving 1MB XMS free.
This really made performance worse.

Here is a summary of the hints I got:
-Before doing anything else one should have at LEAST
2MB XMS free (4MB is really nice)!
-A disk cache of around 0.5MB should be enough,
it saves some more XMS memory.
Or get rid of the cache at all whem a lot of
 swapping is going on.
-One could improve further by making a RAM disk for GCC
 temporary files.
Also, one could run DBLDISK on the RAM disk to improve
 on its size.
-use topline option in GO32 to configure the memory.
-use the shareware program COMBI113.ZIP which is a
 cache/ram disk/XMS manager.
I didn't try it myself yet, but ik looks promising.
 Available at oak.oakland.edu in /pub/msdos/diskutil
-get more memory.

Thanks again,
Raymond Rosmalen
