Would the mythical DPMI 1.0 allow mapping this physical segment so that it
could be accessed without using "far" pointers?  The question of how to
access special devices out beyond 1MB will keep coming up, and for things
like image processing, the overhead of copying to ordinary memory can hurt
performance.
