How big is the RAM disk?  If you have lots of memory, you can cut down on
disk i/o time by putting include files or even the compiler itself on a RAM
disk.  But if the RAM disk doesn't leave enough memory for the compiler to
work in without swapping, you may lose rather than gain performance.  Is the
disk constantly active while compiling?  That would indicate excessive
swapping.
