I tried these using the following commands:
gcc xhello.c -lxaw -lxmu -lxt -lx -lsys
go32 a.out
and had no problems.

What probably happened is that you added a font to the misc directory, and 
re-ran mkfntdir. This created a fonts.dir that did not list the as yet unused
fonts in misc.qip. Try:
qunpack -o misc.qip
mkfntdir
xset fp rehash or restart DVX.
