The changes to fix that should probably be committed to the CVS.

Yes, I think, on balance, this is the best way to fix the problem.
Since that code worked for me at some point, I think it won't be hard
to make it work again.

I agree.  At the very least, we should retain collect2.exe, but
disable it by default (i.e., the default link command will not invoke
collect2).  Does that make sense?
