I regret I have not been able to do a decent job of this.  I have
just posted an untested and crippled version, which does not
change the earlier working code at all.  Hopefully this is
sufficient to allow some integration tests.  All the added code is
after line 1000 in nmalloc.c, and I have commented heavily.  If I
have a chance I will do some more work, such as actually testing. 
If so the posted zip file will be dated later than today.

I have been tied up with such plebian things as job interviews and
a bout of pneumonia, and expect to leave for the month of August
Monday.
