Perhaps it knows that gcc can compile C++ programs?

But I'm not even sure it thinks a C++ compiler is available--where did 
you see any evidence that it did?  If it thinks a C++ compiler is not 
available, perhaps that's because it doesn't know about gxx and gpp?

Caveat: I don't know much about Autoconf, and I didn't try to run the 
script you posted.
