The solution to this is to patch the configure file with the
following Sed snippet:

    # Makefile.in.in is renamed to Makefile.in-in.
    /^ac_config_files=/,/_ACEOF/ {
      s|po/Makefile\.in|&:po/Makefile.in-in|
    }
    /CONFIG_FILES=/ s|po/Makefile\.in|&:po/Makefile.in-in|2

This goes into config.sed, and causes the configure script to have a
rule:

   po/Makefile.in:po/Makefile.in-in

I don't think this is a good solution, since it requires Autoconf to
be installed on the machine where the package is configured. I think
we should try to avoid requiring any unnecessary packages.

It probably does.

I cannot even convince him to rename a single file in the latest
gettext that clashes with another after 8+3 truncation. Feel free to
give it a try, though; perhaps you will be more lucky.

It is much better (IMHO) to force configure to use _deps
unconditionally, with this gork in config.sed:

  s,\.deps,_deps,g

Yes, I did. It sounds like you are trying to use a very old version
of config.* files, which don't work with the latest tools anymore. I
suggest to look in one of the latest ports by Juan Manuel Guerrero,
and adopt his files with somke minimal changes required by Fileutils.
I find Juan's work to be excellent, and used it with trivial changes
in several packages I'm going to release shortly. The above
solutions are all taken from Juan's files.

I have found one more problem with the current port of Fileutils:
typing "ls a:" for an empty floppy disk in A: produces this error
message:

       a:: No more files (ENMFILE)

Strangely, this only happens on plain DOS, but not on Windows. I'm
guessing this is some subtlety in `stat' or some such.
