This isn't used anywhere yet,
freebsd seems to have changed their pattern to
i[34567]-*-frebsd[1234] in bfd directory already,
otherwise most pattern simply
are still with i[3456] (or even only i[345])
or i*86.

So I don't know about your suggestion

Humm, this then represents changing all i[34...] patterns.
This is really the kind of thing where I am afraid of making some
hidden error and committing wrong things....
