What for?  I know that _windows_major is not initialized in the
current CVS.

I'd prefer simply to call get_windows_version in the startup code (and
rename it to __get_windows_version or something).  But let's first
wait to see if the change I suggested, which is reason for changing
get_windows_version, is indeed accepted by others.
