On GNU/Linux, it exits.  Tested on DJ's server, which identifies
itself thusly:

  [eliz AT delorie ~]$ uname -a
  Linux delorie.com 2.2.19-6.2.1smp #1 SMP Mon Apr 9 21:39:38 EDT 2001 \
   i686 unknown
