The last thing I remember is that I had some reservations about NULL
pointer being passed to the function, and wanted to see whether the
posted code coped with that gracefully.  IIRC, the test suite didn't
test for this, so I wanted to look into it myself.  And then this got
buried in the backlog ;-)

You could find the latest message about that (somewhere circa Nov
2000, according to my archives), and pick up there, if you feel like
it.
