Well, anyway, there's a sufficient amount of subtle trickery in Emacs 
that sets the right directories for Info and doc files, and it generally 
assumes an in-place directory structure.  I never examined what would 
happen in a different directory structure; for all I know, you are just 
lucky it works.  Emacs 21 changes the setup for Info files in significant 
ways, so it might or might not work.
