Consider following with bash (LFN=n)

sh-2.04# sh --version
GNU bash, version 2.04.7(1)-release (i686-pc-msdosdjgpp)
Copyright 1999 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
sh-2.04# mkdir longlonglong
sh-2.04# ls
longlong
sh-2.04$ cd longlonglong
sh-2.04$ pwd
/programs/djgpp/test/longlonglong
sh-2.04$ mkdir dir
sh-2.04$ ls
dir
sh-2.04$ cd dir
sh-2.04$ ls
sh-2.04$ echo What > file
sh: file: No such file or directory (ENOENT)

Hm? If I do as follows
sh-2.04$ cd /programs/djgpp/test/longlong/dir
sh-2.04$ echo What > file

Then everything works.
