It's possible that I don't know enough about dwarf2, and am talking 
nonsense because of this.

Are you saying that using dwarf2 still leaves the COFF debug info in the 
executable?  That's not what happens with stabs, AFAIK, and I assumed 
that dwarf2 is like stabs in this aspect.
