Yes, but that's for the reverse case: when the user wants Emacs to
recognize sentences which end with a dot and a single space.

I'm not aware of such a feature, but it might well be there somewhere:
Emacs is so large and new features are added so rapidly, that even my
10+ years of experience and involvement in the development cannot save
me from missing important features.
It is very easy to get the `.' key to produce ". " for you, and do
that only in Texinfo and other text-relatemodes, but perhaps it will
annoy you, because not every period neds a sentence.
Personally, I simply got used to typing two spaces.
You might consider posting a question to gnu.emacs.help, there are a
few very helpful and knowledgeable people there who could help.
