That's what I suspected: DOS doesn't mind if you remove an open file, but 
Windows fails such attempts.  I'd expect DOS to be left with lost 
clusters in that case, but evidently it doesn't always happen.

What about the empty string between the two colons above: does it have 
anything to do with the problem, or is that just a typo?
