We never finished discussing the merits and demerits of this change.
I recall quite a few of reservations about it, so I think it should be

I don't remember the details, but it was not really ready to be applied 
to the sources.  It also lacked docs (IIRC).

If the reasons are not evident by looking at the patches, please tell me 
and I will look again and post my comments.
