This successfully configured and built two GNU packages.  Good work!

However, I now saw quite by chance that all the temporary files in the
directory pointed to by TMPDIR are left there intact, instead of being
deleted.  The files have names like shNNNNNN, where NNNNNN is a
6-digit number.
