One thing you might check: that everything that's being run is really
the executable you think.  Some time ago I was compiling some GNU
software under DOS, and found out the hard way that VMS scripts are also
named *.com.  (Yes, someone included `make.com' to build under VMS...
DOS doesn't take kindly to executing text.)  I saw hard crashes and
reboots there too.
