I don't like the idea of general-purpose library functions that employ
guesswork where the guess could be wrong.  IMHO, heuristics may be
okay in interactive programs, since you can let the user to override
it or repair the damage of a wrong guess (see the example of MULE
features in Emacs 20), but it could yield terrible results in a
library function.
