I doubt if anybody tried this; I certainly did not.

Moreover, I doubt if such a testing can ever yield an answer that is
generic enough.  Any benchmark that is not tied to a specific
application is more or less meaningless.  In contrast, the library is
not specific to any application.  So theoretically you will need to
link and benchmark a large number of different applications to measure
an average effect.  This is too much of an effort, and failing that,
using switches which are said to supply the best overall performance
should be good enough, IMHO.
