   Please explain how did you get into a situation where there's no COMSPEC.  
   AFAIK, it should be always defined on MS-DOS.  If I'm right, comspec is 
   never a NULL pointer.

It's defined when you're in the shell, but you're not obliged to
pass it on to child processes.  a Unixy program might very well
decide to pass on PATH but not COMSPEC.
