Try to copy a large file (few megabytes; I use emacs.exe) and look at the 
disk LED.  Then do the same but invoke `sync' immediately after (like in 
"cp emacs.exe xyzzy;sync").  Then compare the way the LED flashes.  I see 
a definite difference on both MSDOS and Windows 95: there is no disk 
activity after `sync' exits.
