You need *something* to get ms-dos to load the first program, which means one of the files has to have the MZ signature. But the only way "linux compatible" would be worth the effort would be if you can do "gcc hello.c -o hello" on a linux machine, and use that executable (perhaps with a stubify step), on a dos machine. Anything less is a cross compiler, and we might as well stick with COFF.
