Sorry, I didn't realize that.  (Did you tell that explicitly? should I
have guessed?)

In any case, I think the link is created incorrectly: instead of

  -----m  root          510 Dec 15 20:04 gunzip -> /dev/env/DJDIR/bin/gzip

It should be 

  -----m  root          510 Dec 15 20:04 gunzip -> ./gzip

Do you agree?

Jerry Pournelle doesn't test library changes by rebuilding packages
from sources, IIRC.

Anyway, if you don't have resorces to debug this, I guess this issue
will remain unresolved until someone steps forward and debugs it.
