There have been a couple of postings on the djgpp list/NG(s) where programmers expected the "vague" -mcpu to select the (-march) instruction repertoire and complained because they weren't getting the expected code: one had the default changed to pentium and found his code wouldn't run on 386s, and another was getting slow code on his pentium IIRC.
