I thought we only did that for forward slashes. Anyway, be careful with c:\\foo\bar\baz: it _could_ stil be a UNC that somehow got prepended the drive letter (by some code that doesn't know about UNCs). You can easily see that Windows treats such names as UNCs: if you type at the DOS prompt some command that includes such a file name, you will see network activity and a significant delay if the share by the name \\foo\bar does not exist.
