The first value of $(BUILD_DIR) is from my distribution-making tree (as you
probably guessed). I will take a look at this. Thanks for the bug report.

I always make info files using the --no-split option of makeinfo. Then you
don't have to worry about short vs. long filename issues with <blah>.info-<nn>
files.

Again, I take the source distribution, rm -f *.info*, then makeinfo
--no-split.
