Charles, Thanks for this, but it looks like I really got XP in a knot as these suggestions didn't help. I tried the ansi.nt and autoexec.bat (ansi.sys so that ls and grep work in colour/color)from my C800 XP box and they still didn't work. I have now created a XP SP1 slipstream install CD last night and have booted of it tonight and have done a repair XP and now have to sort out some errors when I start command.com. If I do find out how to fix it without reinstalling XP on from scratch I will let people know otherwise any other suggestions or stupid things to try. In 12 hours time I will start reinstalling XP. Andrew
