automake 1.4 is of the same vintage as autoconf 2.13. automake 1.5 is of the

You can remove 4.0. 3.16 can also go, if space is tight.

I think you mean 4.1 rather than 4.0. You can remove 3.1.1, if space is tight.

I think we should keep both of these. 5.6.1 (the second one) was a big jump
from 5.005. 5.6.1 seems to work OK, so if space is tight...
