Here's what C99 says about suffixes and long double values in section 6.4.4.2,
part 4 (page 58 of the PDF):
"An unsuffixed floating constant has type double. If suffixed by the letter f
or F,it has
type float. If suffixed by the letter l or L, it has type long double."
So your code should probably be like this:
long double a=1.0e309L;
