The Red Hat policy is to call it x.y.z-n where "n" is their Red Hat specific stepping number. So, 2.12-1 (well, 2.12-2 now) would be OK. However, it's hard to encode that in a 8.3 filename and not be ambiguous. I think just calling it 2.12 would be fine.
