Well, Charles says that fstat in v2.03 does work on redirected stdin,
so perhaps you could find out what change introduced since v2.03 is
the one that causes the current fstat to fail in this case.

(Btw, if something we say is not clear, don't hesitate to ask
questions.  I think all involved in this should have a clear
understanding of the issues, because we are doing lots of non-trivial
changes, which makes it easy to break things.  An extra pair of eyes
might just catch some potential breakage.)
