For some values of ``major changes'', I presume.  For example, I
wouldn't expect them to add the LFN API in W2K, nor to add whatever
new code that introduced the NTVDM crashes; but they did...

Yes, I also don't like the environment variable feature.  It sounds
like we don't even need it in this case, as we seem to know pretty
well what to do in each case.
