OK, I thought that was a buffer for the whole environment.  My mistake, 
and sorry for jumping in with both feet.

One other thought, based on my lack of knowledge:  Does that 1024 limit 
include the variable name?  Could there need to be an allowance for a 
name + 1024 of value?
