That's the problem: everybody's holding to their positions.

It would be best to avoid the problems that require changes in the
linker script in the first place.  One possibility that was not
considered in this thread would be to reconfigure GCC so that the
features which cause programs to crash are not used at all.  But I'd
hate to regress to such solutions, since I assume those are valuable
features.
