If you are messing with v1.x, you need to read a v1.x version of the
FAQ ;-)

I think in v1.x, you couldn't force emulation.  I don't remember why,
though.  Perhaps because v1.x didn't call the DPMI functions for the
emulation?  (In fact, FP emulation didn't work at all in v1.x when
running in DPMI mode.)

Hmm?  What did you meant to say by that?

AFAIK, the problem mentioned in the FAQ doesn't exist in v2 for at
least two releases, so if you are trying to find an explanation for
that problem, you can relax.
