"man readlink" on indy.delorie.com says this: readlink fails and the buffer remains unchanged if: EACCES Search permission is denied for a component of the path prefix of path. .... EINVAL The named file is not a symbolic link. So it looks like the argument to readlink *must* be a symlink. You *do* resolve the symlinks in all the leading directories inside `readlink', do you?
