Maybe, I didn't look into the sources well enough to tell.

Strangely enough, ld leaves the garbage after the stub, but strip does
not, even though they share the same code.  So it looks like the
problem is on the application level, not in the libraries (BFD etc.),
which would be consistent with your theory.
