Thanks.  I feared it might be a real problem...

Does someone know what could be a reason for the DOS box to close
without any messages?  I'm slightly at a loss where to begin to look
for the reason(s) of this problem.

Did someone try to run a program that uses signals (such as SIGFPE or
SIGALRM) heavily on Windows 98?  Did it work?  Perhaps even running a
program under a debugger should be a good test case.  Hmm...
