That's a good way to go, usually, yes --- 'configure' scripts do have a
reason they were invented for, see? Adapting directory layout to the local
customs of an installation is one of them.

Except for the chicken-and-egg problem, that is, if the program to be
built is the shell itself: what 'sh' should the user call to build 'sh'?
But as your current build setup already requires 'sh', that's not making
anyhting worse, in this case.
