I located free in 'malloc.c' and linked it in with -g. The crashes are still haphazard as far as a particular sequence of actions, but occur within a few moments of starting the program. I have several symify dumps, but the two offending lines are 310 and 313 of the 'free' function of 'malloc.c'. I haven't dug into it enough to understand the BEFORE and AFTER macros. I am testing this in a DOS box under Win95, and I also get the occasional GPF that drops me out of DOS entirely. I haven't gotten any meaningful debug info from those occurences.
