Btw, did you say at some point that installing Windows from the same CD 
on two different machines gets you different behavior?  That is, one 
machine has this problem whereas the other doesn't?

I'm asking that because somebody who works a lot with Win32 compilers 
suggested to compare the size and time stamp of windows/system/vmm32.vxd 
(which reportedly includes both the DPMI server and most of the DOS 
extender built into Windows).  He says that Microsoft have a nasty habit 
of releasing small patches to core modules without changing the OS 
version, so versions which seem identical might in fact be different in 
subtle ways.

But if you can get both kinds of behavior from the same CD, the version 
of vmm32 is not the issue.
