Hi Guys,

My name is Roger Gross, I am directing OpenDOS development for Caldera from the UK development centre. I have exchanged emails with a few of you before.

* This is highly confidential so please keep this under raps *

We intend to port the Java Virtual machine to OpenDOS. We are evaluating SunSoft, Kaffe and NetWise JVM solutions. We intend to use the DJCPP compiler to build the JVM as a DPMI app under OpenDOS. Initially we will call down to real-mode networking and other drivers but the eventual aim is to move that all to 32bit. OpenDOS has a multitasker which will help with multithreading too. The GUI issues are not resolved yet but there are a few options including use of the DJCPP graphics library.

As an aside you may have heard that Sun is porting JavaOS to DOS. This is called "Project Rescue" and is intended to turn legacy 486 systems into Network computers. We have a Project Rescue of our own having just acquired rights to the excellent Arachne Browser. We will continue to work with Michael Polak, Author of arachne for some months whilst he turns Arachne into Netscape for us. A new version of OpenDOS will contain the browser and for free.

Any way, my main reason for contacting you all is that I believe our Java product will succeed if we have a JIT compiler. That's where you guys come in!

Interested?

Please let me know.
Roger
