I agree with Markus: this is a change of functionality that I'm reluctant
to make unless the Make maintainers agree to include it for the other
platforms.  Try sending this suggestion to <bug-gnu-utils AT prep DOT ai DOT mit DOT edu>
(preferably with a context diff which implements it) and see what happens. 
They might just have good reasons for not doing it.
