This is a port of GNU diffutils version 3.6 to MSDOS/DJGPP.
Diffutils are a collection of programs for finding differences
between files:
* diff -- displays differences between 2 files line by line;
* diff3 -- displays differences between 3 files (usually, 2 files
and their common ancestor);
* sdiff -- displays differences between 2 files side by side, and
allows to merge between them interactively;
* cmp -- displays differences between 2 binary files byte by byte.
The documentation of the package includes, in addition to the four
programs mentioned above, also the manual for the Patch utility.
DJGPP specific changes.
=======================
- The DJGPP port now supports colorization without the need of an installed
ansi.sys driver. The support has been realized in a similar way it has
been done for grep and fileutils.
- The most notable change of the FSF distribution is that the DJGPP support
has beeen dropped in favour of cygwin and MinGW support.
- This port will detect at run time if it is running on an OS with LFN support
or not and choose the appropriate temp file name pattern accordingly.
E.g.: "sdiffXXXXXX" if LFN support is available, else "dfXXXXXX" will be
used.
- This port will honor also the DOS specific environment variable TEMP and
TMP if TMPDIR is not set. If neither is accessible then P_tmpdir will
define the location to store temp files. If this directory also does not
exist then the current working directory will be used.
- All other changes are those required to get gnulib sources compiled with
djgpp and are not user visible.
- The port has been configured and compiled on WinXP SP3 and Win98SE using
gcc710b and bnu228b. There is no guarantee that this may be possible with
any other DOS-like OS. Due to the massive use of long file names it will
not be possible to configure and compile without LFN support.
As usual, all djgpp specific files (diffs, README files, etc.) are stored in
the /djgpp directory. The sources have been configured to be build in the
/_build directory. If for some reason it does not work for you, delete its
contents and configure from scratch again.
For further information about GNU diffutils please read the info docs and
NEWS file.
Here is an extract of the NEWS file showing the user visible changes from
the last port (GNU diffutils 3.5) to this one:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Noteworthy changes in release 3.6 (2017-05-21) [stable]
** New features
When one file is a prefix of the other, cmp now appends the shorter
file's size to the EOF diagnostic.
** Bug fixes
Using an invalid regular expression with --ignore-matching-lines=RE (-I)
no longer causes stack overflow. Before, with an invocation like the
following, diff would diagnose the error, but would still proceed to
blow the stack: diff -Ia -I\\ <(echo) <(echo b)
[bug introduced in 2.9]
diff no longer mishandles line numbers exceeding 2**31 on Mingw-w64.
the ---presume-output-tty (ostensibly test-only) option would cause
diff --color to read an uninitialized variable
[bug introduced in 3.4]
** Performance changes
diff's default algorithm has been tweaked to deal better with larger
files, reversing some of the changes made in diffutils-3.4.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
