It may be possible that Quake was the only instance of this weird rep/movsl 
in the "wild".

But the thing is, Quake source should be regarded as "frozen": certainly 
there will be people trying to recompile official unmodified (and 
unchanging) source in the future.
Silent bad binary code on this particular instruction will be yet another 
obstacle on their way.
