Hmmm, I might be wrong, I've not kept up. Seems like DWARF 4 (2010) is
latest standard, though I can't find anything newer than a brief
mention of DWARF 3 (released in 2006) in GDB's NEWS. (BTW, GDB 7.4 was
just released a few days ago.) Apparently old DWARF 1 isn't supported
anymore since GDB 6.7 or such in lieu of DWARF 2 or (GDB 7.0+) 3 or 4.
(But GCC does claim to support DWARF 2,3,4, with or without
extensions. Default seems to be "-g2 -gdwarf-2" [non-strict, esp. GCC
4.5.x or newer] according to the online 4.6.2 manual.)

P.S. It seems it was GCC 4.5.x that removed support for "generic COFF"
on IA32, etc. No huge surprise there.
